In the same way that pediatricians are trained to meet a child's medical needs, our pediatric dentists are uniquely qualified to protect your child's oral health using the most advanced techniques. A pediatric dentist has two to three years of additional training following dental school and limits his/her practice to treating only children. Pediatric dentists are primary and specialty oral care providers for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health needs.

All of our pediatric dentists are Board Eligible or Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

When should I take my child to the dentist for the first check-up?

In order to prevent dental problems, your child should see a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than his/her first birthday. At your child’s first visit, we will perform a thorough oral examination, provide oral hygiene instructions, and provide answers to your questions.  

How can parents prevent tooth decay?

Parents should take their children to the dentist regularly, starting with the eruption of the first tooth. At the first visit, your dentist will recommend a specific program of brushing, flossing, and additional home care instructions to help parents supervise and teach their children. Our pediatric dentists recommend brushing your child’s teeth with a soft bristled toothbrush twice a day until the age of 8 and flossing once their teeth touch. This regimen, along with a healthy, balanced diet, will help your child achieve a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Primary teeth are important because they help with proper chewing and eating, help in speech development, and guide the permanent teeth into correct alignment. A child who can chew easily, speak clearly and smile confidently is a happier child. Healthy primary teeth allow normal development of the jaw bones and muscles, and help guide permanent teeth into position. 

Does my child need to be sedated for dental treatment?

Children who are very young or have high anxiety levels have individual needs and may benefit from sedation for dental procedures. Sedation may also be helpful for children with special needs. There are many safe and effective sedation methods available today that can help relax children and promote a positive environment for optimal and safe dental treatment.

We are committed to providing the best possible care for our patients and we are conservative in our use of sedation. Our pediatric dentists have specialized training in the use of sedation. When appropriate, we provide the following sedation options for our patients in our office:

  • Nitrous Oxide
  • Oral Conscious Sedation
  • Deep Sedation with qualified licensed anesthesiologist

How often does my child need to see the pediatric dentist?

A check-up every six months is recommended in order to prevent cavities and other oral problems. However, our pediatric dentists will tell you when and how often your child should visit, based on their individual oral health needs.
